Some of the best gadgets are those that merge the old with the new. Retro styling is still fashionable, My last car was a 1961 Ford Falcon station wagon. The restoration trend, to preserve these great old stylish designs, sometime calls for innovations that meld older tech with new. Thus a marriage of mobile devices, like a retro car stereo, and an iPod, is something that crosses many Tech barriers.

Hands Up: is the Palm Pre an iPhone Killer?
I’ve never had a Palm device that I can recall, although I’ve resisted the urge to punch out the multitudes of people that have called my WinMo device a Palm Pilot.
The Palm Pre is, Pre release, Pre order, pre release and Pre viewed by many, but when Palm investors start playing up the Pre big time, you have to start wondering if they are getting the shakes over their investment, or if they really believe what they say?
“You know the beautiful thing: June 29, 2009, is the two- year anniversary of the first shipment of the iPhone,” McNamee said today in an interview in San Francisco. “Not one of those people will still be using an iPhone a month later.
I am incredulous at this sort of positive affirmation for an untested, untried, partially marketed Palm device that was rushed to the fore of Palms development process, to try to gain back some market visibility. Of Course investors in the company are going to talk it up, and I think that’s what they are doing!

Link Love: review Zagg Z Buds!
It’s not often I would do this, but as both Brandon and Thomas have had a look at these quality, low cost Ear buds from Zagg, I thought you might also like to have a look at another opinion about the unit. Justin Whitaker from Top Review Shop contacted us today about a review on his site, that he’d written, of the Zagg buds. it’s a great review, and another endorsement for these great ear phones.
“Earphones and earbuds come in all shapes, sizes and designs – but today we have a unique earbud design to take a look at with the Zagg Audio Z.buds. These earbuds are designed to be paired with an iPhone, iTouch or any other MP3 player / cell phone on the market and they boast some nifty features. Built-in noise canceling mic and iPhone music control? Check. Tangle-free nylon cord? Check. Adjustable cord sliders and multiple earbud fittings? Check. In-line volume control? Check. What’s left but to check out these Z.buds for ourselves? “
So hit the link below for another great look at these headphones, and what looks like a quality review site.

Gmail Contact and Calendar Sync, Possible!
A great heads up over at TechCrunch today, put me on to a beta that will make it possible to sync my Google contacts and Calendar to my Windows Mobile device. This is a fix I’ve been wanting for a while. There’s an iPhone app as well.
Nuevasync is a Beta application that allows users to sync OTA, Google contacts, and calendar, as well as their Plaxo contacts.
On your device go to the sign up page here and register, it’s a mobile friendly site. The settings are quite straight forward, and once you’ve set up Nuevasync it will work in the background with little maintenance needed.
It seems to be working quite well with the Tilt at the moment, and hasn’t given me a problems, I’ll persist with it and see how it goes. Worth a try at least! let me know what you think?

Quad Core iPhone and Firmware 3.0, The Rumour Mill.
Whilst we’ve all been astounded by the Palm news today, even the larger sites are praising Palm, and of course we are all overloaded by everything flooding out of CES. We seem to be forgetting, that quietly, in another corner of the United States, MacWorld is spinning quietly on its axis.
MacWorld hasn’t provided any stunning surprises, except for one jaw dropping rumour. A Quad Core processor for the iPhone. Somehow that makes me think of something like this

iPhone Nano, Oh Please!!!
Unaccustomed as I am too pointing out the ludicrous, more ridiculous, utterly obvious rumours that appear in the mobile gadget world, I have hit some sort of glass ceiling, that I have to break through on this iPhone Nano thing.
Firstly, if there is actually an iPhone Nano imminent, would you want one ?
Secondly, with the withdrawal of the great Turtleneck, from the Apple keynote at MacWorld, would any one be expecting the announcement of a new device from Apple this January?
Now I know we have seen case manufacturers and component manufacturers, leak new devices in the past, but you have to wonder at XSKN, a Chinese case manufacturer, who produce a range of iPhone skins, firstly leaking something that looks like a a smaller silicone cover, that looks similair to their iPhone range.
Now we see that the cases are available in all of there mocked up glory on the XSKIN web site.
One could conclude, that the device is real, if a company is offering a case for it, and that would probably violate a whole lot of Apple NDA clauses, wouldn’t it, and have been shut down pretty quickly, even considering the language barrier.
So why is this getting so much mileage, from heaps of sites at the moment? Slow news week, overstuffed on Christmas treats? naivety, or all of the above?
I really find myself wondering if XSKIN think they have found a great way to make their site more visible, or if they really have some inside info, at the moment I’m going with the former. The only other thing I’ll say here is have a look at the wording of the link below, I’m now going to take some time to digest the ramifications of this story, and Christmas dinner!

Available through iTunes now, but expect to get the news of an iTunes update when you start up the app. It has also received an update to fit with the new usability of the iPhone

App for iPhone… Sonic Lighter!
Ok I find this fascinating, not knowing if it’s useful for anything, but it does demonstrate some advanced features of the iPhone, communicating with other iPhone’s in a unique way. Especially the ability to blow on the iPhone’s touch screen and get a response from the app. The app comes from Smule, and it only costs $1, other than amusement, I don’t know what it does but it obviously qualifies for the app store.

Sell your soul for an iPhone? on AT&T
Well even your soul may not be enough to get you an iPhone from AT&T, apparently souls aren’t worth that much anymore. Especially if you’re dealing with what essentially, is a monopoly. One of our good friends, Jack Cook posted an article @ Experience Mobility, and it highlights the flaws in the union between Apple and AT&T, it also brings to the forefront, the lack of understanding that most mobile users have of the contracts they submit themselves to when they sign up for a service from any provider. I’m really astounded that AT&T have policies like this in place, but it’s the nature of the game at this point, isn’t it?
Mike Elgin over at ComputerWorld, came across a hurdle with his service provider, that well, makes my blood curdle. A loyal user, that has committed his whole family to the service provider, made to jump through hoops, for a new device.
After months of cajoling, I finally convinced my wife to buy an iPhone. She went to the local AT&T store today, and was actually turned down. She is, apparently, "upgrade ineligible." She asked if there was any price at which should could buy it, and they said no.
In a lot of ways, we are manipulated, by our mobile dependency, and our lack of understanding of what we sign up for. The conundrum is “I can’t afford to not be connected” and the price you’ll pay to be connected. Then it becomes a little more complicated. Human error is a factor, I recently went through something similair. In a way we are, somehow compliant with our service providers, in a way that only denotes a submissive relationship, that only demonstrates our lack of understanding of what we sign up for, let’s face it we are not all lawyers.
It begs the question are we addicted to connectivity, can we do without an internet connection, not device based.
- Apple and/or AT&T act like everyone is a rabid fanboy. But many people, like my wife, are current Windows and BlackBerry users who are merely toying with the idea of becoming Apple customers. When these fence-sitters finally muster up the interest to go give an Apple product a try, and are met with resistance, incompetence and something that feels like Apple snobbery, much more is being lost than a single iPhone purchase. My wife needs a new laptop, too, and might have loved the iPhone and made a total, lifelong conversion to iPhone, and Macs, too. Now she’s got a broken phone and needs to upgrade and will probably just get another BlackBerry because she harbors ill will toward Apple. We’re also now thinking about switching carriers. We’ll have to file this one in the "FAIL" category.
In really simple ways, the iPhone has changed the mobile environment, some good (well lot’s good) and some bad. Maybe one of the good things is a heads up about looking into your contract a little bit further.
